Barry Chambers, 27, brought the city centre to a standstill when he climbed on the roof in Midland Road and began throwing bricks and masonry at police.

Repairs to parked cars and neighbouring houses has been put at �40,000.

Appearing at Gloucester Crown Court, Chambers, of Brook Street, was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced at a later date.

Chambers refused to come down from the roof resulting in police negotiators eventually agreeing to meet a number of his demands.

He was given cigarettes, Pepsi and a portion of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Gloucestershire Police later defended the move claiming his human rights could have been infringed if he had not been given food and water.

In court he admitted seven counts of criminal damage, aggravated vehicle taking, and four other driving-related offences.
