Alliss wants smoking to be banned from the boxing ring |
An asthmatic champion boxer is backing calls for smoking to be banned from public places. Leigh Alliss, 29, from Stroud in Gloucestershire, holds the Western Area Light Heavyweight title.
He avoids smoky atmospheres in the run-up to a match, but says he suffers badly on fight night itself.
"In a boxing ring, smoking should be banned," said Alliss, whose doctor has prescribed him with an inhaler for his mild complaint.
Allis, who trains in Bristol, competes against Armenian, Varuzhan Davtyan, in Plymouth on Friday.
"You have two professional sportsmen, earning a living, and your lungs are really, really important because you're exerting yourself to the extreme," Allis added.
On Thursday, Scottish MPs voted to introduce a ban on smoking in public places in Scotland from next April.
