RAF tankers move for base repairs
RAF VC10
The RAF's VC10s will move from RAF Brize Norton to Fairford
RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire is to become the temporary home to the air force's refuelling tankers.

The base will be used during repair work to the runway at Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

The Ministry of Defence admits that the move will mean more aircraft movements and noise, and has written to the town's councillors about the plan.

The base will be used for four months by Tristar and VC10 jets currently based at Brize Norton.

More noise

The commanding officer at RAF Brize Norton, Wing Commander Mark Baker, wrote to councillors explaining the reasons for the relocation.

He admitted there will be more noise but says every effort will be made to minimise disruption.

Operations to and from Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans means there will be some aircraft movements during quiet hours.

There will also be increased road traffic around the Cotswold base as passengers and freight travel to and from Fairford.

Operations are due to start in November.
