Carol O'Reilly said the surrogacy was not the cause of death |
An agency for surrogate mothers has defended the practice against claims that it is dangerous, following the death of a Bristol woman. Natasha Caltabiano, a 29-year-old nurse from Weston-super-Mare died shortly after giving birth to a boy.
Surrogacy UK of Newent, Gloucs, is run by Carol O'Reilly, who is carrying a child for another couple - her fourth.
Ms O'Reilly said: "The fact is she died through an aneurism and it wasn't actually pregnancy-related."
Surrogacy UK helps mothers to arrange life insurance, the premiums are paid by the intended parents and the pay out is worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Natasha's mother has been widely quoted blaming surrogacy for her daughter's death.
But Ms O'Reilly added: "The hospital did say to us that this could have happened at any time.
"Maybe the stress of the pregnancy did bring it on a bit earlier but this was just waiting to happen."
Ms Caltabiano died at St Michael's maternity hospital in Bristol, shortly after giving birth to a baby boy who is now with his intended parents in Northern Ireland.
Natasha Caltabiano leaves leaves two young children who are now being cared for by other members of her family.
