Spent batteries can be placed in household recycling boxes in Stroud, Gloucestershire, from 24 January. The district council expects a large number of batteries to be disposed of following Christmas.
Cllr Nigel Cooper, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: "At this time of year, many batteries will be purchased for toys and household items."
For technical reasons, only ordinary, non-rechargeable dry-cell batteries can be accepted.
Hearing aid or watch-type batteries found in the green recycling boxes will be rejected.
