Regiment acts to stop disbandment
The Royal Gloucestershire Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment
The regiment says disbanding is "incomprehensible"
Members of an army regiment have launched a campaign in an attempt to avoid being disbanded.

The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire (RGBW) regiment has urged people to write to their MPs to stop it being disbanded or amalgamated.

The government plans to cut the infantry by four battalions. A decision in the next two weeks could merge RGBW with Devon and Dorsetshire.

The RGBW is asking for people to call for the regiment to be left unchanged.

It says the option of disbandment would be "incomprehensible".

A long history

The regiment's commanding officer, General Kevin O'Donaghue, said: "RGBW do not wish to disband. Such action would destroy over 300 years of history and provide no future for those serving in the present regiment.

"It would also sever a long history of close links with the communities of those counties."

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said the issue was still under consultation.

The RGBW is one of seven regiments, each of one battalion, in the Prince of Wales's Division.
