Memories help assess flood risk

People will be encouraged to 'own' their local flood history
The University of Gloucestershire is spearheading a project to involve local people in the history and understanding of flood risk along the River Severn.

Significant floods severely affected the lower reaches of the river in 1968, 1981, 1990 and 2000.

People from Bewdley to Lydney are being invited to share recollections and help compile evidence of past floods.

Dr Lindsay McEwen said: "We hope to develop interest and expertise in flooding across the community."

The joint project is being funded by a grant of 42,535 from the Royal Society COPUS and 15,000 from the Environment Agency.

People will be encouraged to establish, debate and 'own' their local flood history and look at the future impact that environment change may have on the lower Severn floodplain.

A steering group has been set up comprising representatives from the University, the Environment Agency, the National Flood Forum, Severn Trent plc and local councils.
