Potter wrote 28 plays in all

Potter was born in Gloucestershire's Forest of Dean in 1935 and was prominent in British screen drama for 30 years before his death in 1994.

Events to mark his life have been taking place all week, culminating in a day of celebration on Sunday.

In all, Potter wrote 28 plays including The Singing Detective, Pennies From Heaven and Brimstone and Treacle.

John Belcher, who now lives in the Potter family home and knew the playwright, told the BBC that his work did not win universal approval.

"Older people were a bit upset by some of the sex scene and violence.

"They couldn't understand how such a local lad could think such things."

Potter pursued careers in journalism and politics before he was afflicted with Psoriatic Arthropathy - a type of arthritis - at 26.

His non-naturalistic style - featuring some surreal touches - was partly a reaction to what he described as the "dreary" drama of the time.

Four months before his death in 1994 Potter was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
