Supermarket giant Tesco has decided at the eleventh hour not to close the Longlevens Post Office in Gloucester. The news was broken by the city's Labour MP Parmjit Dhanda in the Commons on Monday night.
"They have said it will not close on 8 May as originally intended. It will remain in the One Stop store while they search for a new location."
Residents, joined by local church leaders, campaigned fiercely to save the branch.
New location
The supermarket chain wanted to upgrade its One Stop shop in Longlevens to a Tesco Express, closing its post office to make more space.
But just hours before the MP was due to raise the issue in parliament, the company faxed him to say it had reversed its decision.
Mr Dhanda said: "There can be few occasions on which a Member of this House actually relishes being forced to rewrite his or her speech just hours before a debate.
"Of course there is still much to be done. A new location in Longlevens must still be found. But I welcome this significant step forward by Tesco."
