Crackdown on Christmas drinkers
Breath test
The campaign will run throughout the party season
Gloucestershire police are beginning a crackdown on Christmas drink driving.

Random and organised stop checks will be carried out in the county between 9 December and 2 January.

And a new 'Next Day Danger' scheme will be in place to warn drivers of the adverse effects of having even one or two alcoholic drinks.

Last year's Christmas campaign resulted in more than 3,200 motorists being breathalysed in Gloucestershire, with 5% over the limit.

David Jamieson, road safety minister, said: "On average, 10 people die each week as a result of drink driving.

"What many people do not realise is that they may still be driving over the limit the morning after.

"If people have an early start the next day, they should not drive or not drink the night before."
