A Gloucestershire-based wetland conservation charity is launching a project to track the movements of threatened birds in East Africa. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge has set up a website called, Survival at the Edge of the Earth to show the real-time journeys of the Lesser Flamingo.
The website project marks the expansion of a major satellite tracking research project designed to improve understanding of the movements of the threatened species.
The birds will have tiny solar-powered satellite transmitters, weighing just 40 grams, strapped to their backs to track their movements.
The information, previously unrecorded, is then relayed directly to the trust's website.
It is hoped, by studying the birds in this way, measures can be taken to conserve them.
