The new stadium will replace Layer Road |
Building work on a new 14m community stadium for Colchester United has finally begun. The Championship club will move to its new 10,000 seater stadium at Cuckoo Farm in the north of the town from the start of the 2008/9 season.
The new ground will replace Layer Road which has been the home of Colchester United for 70 years.
Colchester United was granted planning permission to build the new stadium in March last year.
A 10m loan from Colchester Borough Council will fund the 14m ground at Cuckoo Farm in the north of the town.
The remainder of the money will come in the form of grants from the Football Foundation and local government and development agencies.
The U's have played at their current Layer Road ground since they were formed in 1937.
