Rare bird eggs theft investigated
Avocet
The avocet is a protected species
The theft of up to 36 rare bird eggs from an Essex country park is being investigated by police.

The avocet eggs are believed to have been taken from Hadleigh Castle Country Park on Monday 16 May.

A ranger discovered 18 nests missing from Two Tree Island Lagoon in the park. Human and dog footprints were found nearby.

Avocet eggs have a 24-day incubation period, and it is thought the chicks could have been born on Monday.

Police wildlife liaison officers across the UK have been notified.

The avocet is a protected species and the emblem of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
