New teachers in Southend have swapped careers |
More than 30 teachers are preparing to start work in Southend-on-Sea, where schools are suffering staff shortages. The new recruits have all completed a course enabling them to side-step into teaching from other careers.
The 33 newcomers now moving into new posts took part in a Government funded graduate teacher programme.
This helps entrants gain experience - and earn an income while training in the classroom - before taking up their full-time posts.
Officials at Southend running the one-year programme are now looking for people with skills in mathematics and science.
It is the third year the programme has been running in Southend.
Officials say more people have signed up than ever before and the successful entrants are helping the borough beat its shortage of teachers.
