Gordon Brown arrived in Exeter after meetings in Northern Ireland |
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has visited Exeter Racecourse for the latest in a series of cabinet meetings to be held outside London. As well as talking through matters with the cabinet, the event was also an opportunity for local representatives to discuss issues with ministers. The meeting was due to be held last month but was postponed due to snow. Mr Brown flew to Devon from Northern Ireland, where a crucial political deal was being finalised. The meeting in Exeter was the eighth cabinet conference to be held outside the capital. The prime minister introduced the idea of holding the meetings outside Westminster in September 2008, when Birmingham hosted the first such regional gathering since 1921.
