Cricket club to move travellers

Roborough cricket pitch
The cricket club said it was planning to issue a writ

A Devon cricket club is planning legal action to remove a group of travellers which has set up camp on its ground.

Roborough Cricket Club, based near Plymouth, claims the group, which arrived a week ago, damaged the pitch by driving vans and quad bikes over it.

The travellers, who are living in 10 caravans, said they came to the area to find work but would not be staying long.

The cricket club said it would issue a writ giving them 12 days to leave.

Club groundsman Mike Gaylard said: "There are marks the quad bikes have made all down the wicket.

"I'm quite mad, to be perfectly honest. You see all your work go downhill because of these people, you get disheartened."

Katie, one of the travellers, said: "I came from Scotland.

"It's awfully rainy up there and there's not much work so we decided to come here.

"The police came because the boys were playing on their quad bikes, but they just told us to stay off the grass and we did."

Devon and Cornwall Police cricket teams are due to play a match at the ground this weekend.
