The streets of Exeter were packed as thousands watched newly promoted Exeter City's victory parade Thousands of people have lined the streets of a Devon city to celebrate their football team's promotion. Exeter City players and staff were cheered as an open-top bus drove slowly through the streets. After the victory parade, marking the Grecians' promotion to League One, Exeter's Lord Mayor hosted a civic reception at the city's Guildhall. "Who said we'd be happy with mid-table this year?" manager Paul Tisdale told cheering supporters. "It's a great day for the club. Thank you for your support this year, and hopefully it will be stronger next year when we are in League One." Among the supporters outside the Guildhall was 74-year-old Ethel Jennings, who has been a City fan "for a long time". | I'm really looking forward to next season |
"It's wonderful - I didn't think this would happen, City getting promoted twice like this," she said. "It's so exciting and I'm really looking forward to next season." Exeter City clinched their second successive promotion with a 1-0 win away at Rotherham on 2 May. Later the bus will return to St James Park for a medal presentation and party in the park with fans.
