Step forward for travellers' site

A travellers' site has taken a step forward in Plymouth after Labour councillors walked out of an emergency meeting in anger.

They tried to halt the meeting to debate the plot in Efford, but failed.

Labour accused the ruling Conservatives of "bulldozing through" a decision on funding which they said should have been debated at the council on 2 March.

But the Tories said a delay could cause the council to lose 1m of government cash towards the site.

The plot, on disused council land at Military Road, was chosen last year for a Gypsy and traveller camp after consultation with local residents.

Two privately-owned sites, at Mowhay Road, St Budeaux, and at Coypool, have also been earmarked for possible camps.
