Glass firm ends city production

Glass manufacturer Pilkington is ending production in Plymouth with the loss of 52 jobs.

The firm blamed the economic downturn which had led to a drop in demand for replacement windows which it makes on site at Estover.

Manufacturing operations will be transferred to Pilkington's factory in Bristol from the end of December.

The Plymouth business will remain open as a distribution base for customers in the South West, with nine workers.

A company spokesman said it would be seeking "alternative opportunities for existing employees".
