The council says allotment members can identify vacant land

People in the South Hams area of Devon have planned a peaceful demonstration for more allotments.

Growing vegetables has become more popular, but local authorities are struggling to meet demand because of the high price of land.

Totnes Allotment Association has secured 14 plots, but it has more than 90 members, all keen to have a patch.

Campaigners will dress from head to toe in green, to show the environmental benefits of growing your own veg.

Sara Garland, who waited for more than two years to get an allotment at Castle Meadow in Totnes, said the benefits were numerous.

"It's great exercise, great fun and really good to encourage children to grow vegetables," she told BBC News.

"You can't buy anything like it basically, because it tastes fantastic if you grow it yourself."

Totnes Town Council has said allotment association members could come forward to point out any possible allotment plots they may have found.

The peaceful demonstration will be held outside the Civic Hall in Totnes later.
