Marines given budget hotel rooms

Royal Marines on exercise: Pic Royal Navy
The MoD says the move will allow marines to bond

Eighty Royal Marines have been moved from their permanent base in Devon to a local budget hotel.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the move was necessary to allow more troops to stay at RMB Chivenor before being deployed to Afghanistan.

The MoD confirmed the 80 marines have moved into the Travelodge Hotel in Barnstaple, a few miles from the base.

A spokeswoman said the Travelodge was the most inexpensive solution, but would not say how much it was costing.

Accommodation review

Personnel from elsewhere in the country, who are joining the Commando Logistics Regiment in Afghanistan, have, in turn, moved into the vacated accommodation at RMB Chivenor.

The MoD said it would allow the Royal Marines to train together and bond before their hostile deployment.

It is not known how long the Royal Marines will be staying at the hotel.

The MoD spokeswoman said there were no security issues and accommodation arrangements were constantly under review.
