Protesters demand theatre rethink
Northcott demo
Demonstrators held a rally in Princesshay Square
Staff and supporters of the threatened Northcott Theatre in Exeter have held a protest rally.

About 100 people turned out to sing songs and gather signatures on a petition in protest at a proposal by the Arts Council to withdraw funding.

The Arts Council says it has concerns about the way the theatre is run and has warned the theatre.

The theatre faces the complete loss of a 547,000 grant, about a third of its total income, from April 2009.

Theatre bosses said there was a possibility the Northcott could close with the loss of 58 jobs.

It had only reopened in December after an 11-month, 2.1m revamp when it was told the grant could be stopped.

The Arts Council is due to make its decision about the theatre's funding on 21 January.
