'Stolen' US body part used in op
Derriford Hospital
Derriford Hospital was one of 22 hospitals alerted
Only one piece of suspect bone tissue, allegedly stolen from undertakers in America, was used in an operation, say Derriford Hospital bosses.

The Plymouth hospital, the biggest in the South West, said the patient later died of unrelated causes.

Body parts reportedly stolen by New York gangs, were sent to 22 UK hospitals including Derriford in Plymouth and Torbay.

Torbay said it was alerted to the problem before it used any.

More than 1,000 body parts were allegedly plundered by gangs in New York and then sold for transplants.

Biomedical Tissue Services, the firm at the centre of the scandal, exported 77 body parts to the UK last year.

New York investigators said death certificates were doctored, suggesting people were younger and healthier when they died than was actually the case.

Four people have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
