Hospital redundancy letters delay
Derriford Hospital
The hospital is facing a projected deficit of up to 25m
A Devon hospital has backed down in its plan to send letters to some members of staff warning them they could be redundant by Christmas.

About 70 workers at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth were expecting to get redundancy letters at the end of their shifts on Thursday.

After talks with unions, managers promised more consultation on the cuts.

The cutbacks, including losing 50 beds and 400 posts, are part of attempts to bridge a projected 25m funding gap.

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust said: "We are continuing to work closely with the unions in relation to the proposed reduction of posts.

"This is work in progress and we are still finalising which posts will be at risk.

"Because of this and also following a request from a union for a further meeting prior to the letters being sent out, it is unlikely that the letters will be issued this week."
