Staff protest against health cuts
Derriford Hospital
The hospital is facing a projected deficit of up to 25m
Staff at a Plymouth hospital are planning a day of protest in the city.

The planned demonstrations on 9 September by union members represents their reaction to proposed cuts for the city's Derriford Hospital.

The Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust plans to close 60 beds and cut up to 400 jobs to avoid a 25m projected deficit.

Unions called for the resignation of chief executive Paul Roberts last week. The hospital trust board said it had "absolute confidence" in him.

The trust board said it understood staff concerns, but added the hospital was working hard not to cut jobs.

Earlier this week, health campaigners in Cornwall announced they were planning a protest march against proposed changes to services at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, St Michael's Hospital in Hayle and West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust is considering closing one hospital, wards and other departments to tackle a projected 31m overspend.

The march through Hayle is set to take place on Sunday.
