A week-old calf died in the fire |
Two keepers from a Devon zoo are being honoured for their bravery for trying to save three giraffes during a fire. Paignton Zoo's Neil Bemment and Jim Dicks will receive a certificate and a letter of commendation from Devon's Chief Fire Officer on Wednesday.
Three Rothschild giraffes, including a week-old calf, died but two elephants were saved in the 12 February fire.
Mr Bemment freed the elephants and tried giving the giraffes first aid after receiving oxygen therapy himself.
Mr Dicks assisted Mr Neil Bemment and will receive a letter of commendation.
An investigation has concluded the fire started after hot glass from a heater fell on animal bedding.
The inquiry by senior managers found zoo staff were professional and dealt with the incident well.
