Towns gain new community police
New police community support officers are starting their duties in four north Devon towns.

Five officers will be based in Barnstaple, three in Holsworthy, two in Torrington and one in South Molton.

The extra numbers are aimed to provide public reassurance and reduce the fear of crime.

They will be able to issue fines for minor offences and tackle anti-social behaviour. They will also be able to detain people for up 30 minutes.

Devon and Cornwall Police plan to boost neighbourhood policing with the recruitment of 180 community support officers this year.

The force has received several big increases in spending to fund more community support officers.
