Paignton Zoo's baby giraffe

Paddy the giraffe is said to be slowly improving, after the fire which killed his mate and week-old calf at Paignton Zoo in Devon.

Vets have prescribed antibiotics and steroids for the giraffe to counter the effects of shock and ease his breathing by helping clear his lungs.

Kizi and her baby died on Sunday night in the fire, thought to have been caused by an electrical fault.

The zoo has received cards, flowers and donations from around the world.

Neil Bemment, the zoo's curator of mammals, said Paddy would be kept indoors for a couple of days.

"Paddy has shown some improvement but he is not out of the woods yet," Mr Bemment said.

"We want to get him back into some kind of routine and his keepers will be providing lots of TLC."

The zoo is limiting the giraffe viewing gallery for a few days.
