Transplant refugee loses appeal
A Sri Lankan refugee given a kidney transplant in Devon has been told he will be deported.

A final legal bid and petition to allow the 28-year-old asylum seeker to remain on compassionate grounds has failed.

Mr Sebastian, not his real name, will be unable to get the anti-rejection drugs he needs in Sri Lanka.

Dr Peter Rowe from Plymouth's Derriford hospital has said Mr Sebastian will die without his medication.

His appeal was refused by Home Office minister Tony McNulty.

Mr Sebastian developed kidney failure while living in Plymouth. When a perfectly matched kidney became available in 2003, he had a transplant at Derriford Hospital.

The Sir Lankan High Commission said an alternative anti-rejection drug was available, but Dr Rowe said the side effects of it made Mr Sebastian very ill.
