An 11-year-old boy has been served with a two-year Anti-social behaviour order (Asbo) in Devon. It was issued after he was convicted of seven offences, including possessing an offensive weapon, criminal damage and other public order breaches.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is also subject to a curfew and banned from some shops in Honiton.
Police said the use of an Asbo was a last resort, but added they hoped it would send out a clear message.
Numerous complaints
The Asbo was imposed on the boy from Honiton at Exeter Youth Court.
The case was brought after police received what they described as "numerous complaints" from members of the public and the "huge impact he has had on the community".
The boy is subject to a home curfew between the hours of 1930 and 0700 and cannot cause harassment alarm or distress, throw sticks, stones or missiles.
He is also not to enter any shops in Honiton which subscribe to the town's Shop Watch Association.
Police said the use of an Asbo was the final step in any process set to tackle such issues.
Town Neighbourhood Beat manager Pc Ian Atyeo said: "We hope the stringent conditions of this Asbo sends out a clear message, to all young people that behaviour of this kind will not be tolerated and that the police will take positive action against such offenders."
However, Devon and Cornwall Police added that in the majority of cases "early intervention between the police and partner agencies see many young people refraining from such activities, understanding the distress it can cause".
