Eight people hurt in A380 crash
Crash scene on the A380
The road is expected to remain closed for some time
Eight people have been taken to hospital after a five-vehicle road accident in Devon.

The accident happened on the A380, the main route into south Devon, near Mamhead, between Exeter and Newton Abbot, on Monday.

The road was closed and traffic diverted along the A38.

The injured were taken to Torbay Hospital. One person suffering from chest injuries was airlifted to hospital by air ambulance.

Icy conditions

The crash, which occurred at about 0730 GMT on Monday, involved a green Audi A4, a red Ford Ka, a blue Ford Ka, a white Toyota van and a black Fiat Punto.

It is believed the white van, carrying four people on board, was involved in a collision with one car. The other three vehicles crashed while avoiding the first accident.

Five appliances from Devon Fire and Rescue Service and four ambulances were called to the scene.

Police said icy conditions could have been a factor in the cause of the accident.

MPc Steve Adams of Devon and Cornwall Police said: "It was very cold overnight and that left the road surface cold."

Police are asking motorists to take extra care while driving in freezing temperatures.
