Unions hope the job losses can be made through natural wastage |
Workers at Devonport Naval Base have been told that more than 300 jobs will need to go within the next three years. The base, home of refitting the UK's fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, says it needs to shed 114 civilian and 191 military workers.
The losses, which represents about a quarter of the workforce, are part of a national cost-cutting exercise.
Unions say they hope the jobs can be shed through natural wastage with voluntary redundancies a last resort.
Naval base commander, Commodore Simon Lister, said he would be meeting Defence Secretary John Reid with local MP Linda Gilroy.
He said in a statement: "I do not underestimate the concerns that this announcement will cause to many of the workforce.
"At this stage I would not wish to speculate on where the manpower reductions will be made."
