The kittiwakes nest and breed on the Devon cliffs |
A camera focused on one of Britain's biggest colonies of kittiwakes, on cliffs in Devon, has been switched on. Royal Marines in April installed a web cam so the colony of breeding kittiwakes can be monitored on the cliffs near Exmouth.
The commandos were asked to install the cameras by local conservationists, who hope to learn more about the birds through the hi-tech monitoring.
TV naturalist David Bellamy officially started the camera on Tuesday.
The tiny remote-controlled camera zooms in and follows the gulls, which are known for their snowy white plumage and the distinctive black tips on the ends of their wings.
Internet users can see the live images on a number of web sites including Haven Holidays and the RSPB.
The birds spend winter out at seas in the Atlantic and only come to shore in the spring and summer to nest and breed on cliff faces and other high places.
