Police have had to deal with raves in fields in the past |
Barriers are being put up at an east Devon airfield to stop illegal raves being held. Three years ago, hundreds of revellers descended on Smeatharpe after failing to get into the Glastonbury Festival.
Although police are concentrating their efforts around Smeatharpe they are warning that illegal raves could pop up anywhere in the county.
Officers are asking the public to tip them off over suspicious activity on open land or in disused buildings.
'Contingency plans'
Insp Norman Amey said: "In previous years, we have had problems with people who were unable to buy tickets for Glastonbury, trying to set up alternative site in our force area.
"The airfield at Smeatharpe has been targeted previously, and we will be putting a specific operation in place to prevent mass trespass or illegal raves at the site.
"But we are also aware that this sort of gathering may happen anywhere across the force, and our contingency plans take this into account."
Devon and Cornwall Police are joining four other forces from the South West, Wiltshire, Avon & Somerset, Dorset and Gloucestershire, because they say the region is considered to be one of a number of susceptible areas in the UK for illegal raves. The project is called Operation Pell.
