Police dogs are helping the force see life through a lens with new cameras which allow officers to safely find out where armed criminals are hiding. Three animals in the Devon and Cornwall Police's dog unit can now be fitted with small cameras that beam back pictures to hand-held monitors.
The cameras can help let police know if suspects are hiding in a building, its layout and whether anyone is armed.
They can also be used in the dark through infra-red imaging.
The Firearms Intervention and Dangerous Operations (FIDO) cameras would provide vital information which could be used to protect police and save lives, the force said.
Tony Jordan, head of the dog unit, said: "Information provided by the cameras can help police react to sieges with the benefit of knowing what they are dealing with inside the building before they enter it.
"The use of the FIDO camera on police dogs can help bring sieges to a safer conclusion."
