Destroyer work secures 300 jobs
HMS Manchester - Royal Navy
HMS Manchester is the third ship to bear the name
Hundreds of jobs have been secured at Devonport Dockyard in Plymouth by an MoD contract to carry out work on a warship during its docking period.

The yard will start working on Type 42 destroyer HMS Manchester in March 2006.

Managers said the contract came at a vital time when competition for surface ship contracts was intense. It will provide work for about 300 people.

DML is involved in further bids for the docking period of HMS Portland and the refit of HMS Somerset.

The successful bidder will be announced in December.

HMS Cornwall is currently being refitted at the Plymouth yard.

HMS Manchester is the third ship to bear the name. The 5,200-tonne, 141m (462.5ft) vessel was launched on November 1980.
