Some elderly drivers should consider giving up driving and take the bus instead, police in south Devon have said after a number of road accidents. The call comes after several crashes over several weeks.
One accident saw 20,000 of damage when a male driver in his 70s, with a wooden leg, demolished a Paignton estate agent's plate glass window.
In another, an 80-year-old driver's car plunged 10ft (3m) off a Torquay road, landing outside a basement flat.
The accidents involved automatic cars and mostly elderly drivers, police said, adding that none of the drivers involved were seriously hurt.
Torbay road safety officer Pc Chris Lancaster said suggesting some drivers should call a halt to their motoring was a "sensitive matter", but families and GPs had a responsibility to recommend when the time was right.
He added that it could be cheaper to take the bus or a taxi as some cars cost as much as 16 a day to run.
