A blocked culvert led to flooding

The �4.2m flood defence scheme at Ottery St Mary was opened last year. In 1997 severe flooding damaged 55 properties in the town.

But a culvert became blocked last week with debris washed down during a storm.

Remote sensing devices have now been installed at the culvert to automatically alert the Environment Agency to any problems.
