Green solution for allotment loos
Users of a Plymouth allotment are celebrating the installation of a new loo which could eventually provide them with a supply of compost.

A compost loo has been installed at the Kendal Place allotment in Whitleigh.

All the waste will be reduced and recycled in an environmentally-friendly way and once broken down it can be spread on the soil on the allotments.

It usually takes around a year to fill and because it is out in the open air there are no unpleasant smells.

'Practical dilemma'

Conservation organisation BTCV helped the council and tenants completely renovate the overgrown plots in a week earlier this year.

And BTCV's bid for an award from B&Q has funded the compost toilet, which looks like a shed on stilts.

Cllr Brian Vincent said: "It's always been a practical dilemma for gardeners who are happy to spend hours on the allotment and don't have toilet facilities nearby.

"Many of our allotment tenants care about the environment so it's great that they have this green solution."
