Good response in 999 hoaxer hunt
Police control room
Police say 999 should only be used if there is a real emergency
Devon and Cornwall Police say they have had a good response to an appeal to track down a serial 999 hoax caller.

The man has made about 45 hoax calls to police from public and roadside emergency telephones. Ambulance and fire services have also been hoaxed.

Last week, police released recordings of the caller making false reports of road accidents and suspect packages to see if anyone recognised his voice.

Officers said members of the public had given details of possible suspects.

Police said the public should call 999 only if there was an immediate danger to life, an immediate risk of serious injury, a crime is in progress or is about to happen, or if an offender is still at the scene or nearby.

In the last 12 months, the force received 25,000 inappropriate or hoax calls.

The maximum penalty for making hoax calls to the police and wasting their time is seven years in prison.
