Street patrol by Devon politician
Police tackling anti-social behaviour
Mr Streeter says troublemakers seem to be getting younger
A Devon MP has spent Friday evening patrolling the streets of his constituency with police to see for himself the level of youth crime.

Gary Streeter, the Conservative MP for South West Devon, says he is concerned at the vandalism and intimidation in the Plympton and Plymstock areas.

He says youth crime is one of the major issues facing his constituents and that anti-social behaviour is getting worse.

"We need to get an urgent grip on youth crime in these areas," he said.

New generation

Mr Streeter wants to see for himself how Devon and Cornwall police officers are tackling the issue.

The MP says low level violence and intimidation in Plympton and Plymstock is on the increase.

He is concerned the troublemakers appear to be getting younger and says he recently spoke to a crowd of about 30 rowdy young people in Plympton late at night.

One 13-year-old girl admitted to the politician that she was very drunk and her parents did not know where she was.

Mr Streeter believes there is a decline in respect for other people and the problem of binge drinking is leading to more extreme behaviour.

He said: "I certainly support the police in their effort to crack down on youth crime.

"And unless we are to have a whole new generation of criminals, the issue does need to be tackled urgently."
