The town has special links with the Pilgrim Fathers |
A group whose members provide an unusual welcome to cruise passengers in Devon is appealing for more volunteers to come forward. Members of the Dartmouth Players regularly dress up as the Pilgrim Fathers to welcome passengers as they step ashore at the port.
Dartmouth has special links with the Pilgrim Fathers who stopped there at the start of their journey to the US.
But dwindling numbers mean the service may have to stop.
Now more volunteers are needed to dress up as part of the welcome which proves particularly popular with American visitors.
It is estimated that each cruise ship passenger spends an average 200 in each port and in July Dartmouth will be visited by the biggest cruise ship in its history, the Minerva II.
Polly Birchall, South Hams Tourism Manager said: "The cruise industry brings a lot of money into the region and we need to make the passengers feel special."
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is invited to attend a meeting at Dartmouth Guildhall on 3 March.
