Up to 26 public lavatories in east Devon could be closed |
Almost half the public toilets in east Devon could be shut as part of a cost-cutting exercise. The district council says it needs to make the cuts because of changes to government support and the depletion of its general fund reserves.
The council says it is close to achieving its target of saving a total of 2m from all services.
But to do that it needs to save in excess of 100,000 on the cost of public conveniences.
A total of 24 toilets will remain open all year round but the council say a further 26 could close if it cannot enter into partnership arrangements with local town and parish councils.
That would mean some places such as Branscombe, Broadclyst, Broadhembury, East Budleigh, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, Otterton and Woodbury losing public toilets.
Seven other lavatories - at Exmouth, Sidmouth and Seaton - would be closed during the winter months.
