 Britain's yachting industry is estimated to employ 29,000 people |
A Devon university has launched a new degree that will equip graduates for employment in the yachting industry. The BSc (Hons) Marine Studies in Ocean Yachting course has been designed in response to marine industry needs, the University of Plymouth said.
Graduates can look at career possibilities ranging from yacht and superyacht operations, to project management for new builds and refit.
Course organisers are currently recruiting students for this September.
Ship simulator
The course has been designed to cover the requirements of Maritime and Coastguard Agency-approved professional qualifications and will be taught by staff from the School of Earth, Ocean and Environmental Sciences.
It will utilise a state-of-the-art ship simulator capable of simulating a range of ship types ranging from large oil tankers to high-speed jet boats.
In addition to simulator training, yachting students will undertake a period of training afloat, using 70 foot (21.3m) yachts provided by the Ocean Youth Trust.
Employment within the UK-based industry is estimated by the British Marine Industries Federation (BMIF) to be 29,000 and is dominated by small to medium-sized enterprises.
