A Devon zoo is celebrating the safe arrival of a baby Bactrian camel. The last one born there in 2004 died when it was just nine days old. The youngster, a male, was born at Paignton Zoo on Saturday and has been called James.
He is baby number five for father Oscar and mother Carmel. Their most recent surviving offspring, Alice, was born in 2002 and is still at the zoo.
James was born after a gestation period of about 13 months.
'Extremely endearing'
Curator of mammals Neil Bemment said: "Camels are always popular zoo babies.
"At the moment he is all legs and is extremely endearing. He is grey and woolly now but his coat will turn brown and shaggy with time."
The Bactrian camel is endangered and is protected by law in China and Mongolia.
