Police are investigating a suspected arson attack on the main railway line linking the South West to Waterloo. Forty feet of signalling cables were badly damaged at Whimple, near Exeter.
The fire started at about midnight on Thursday. Police say there were no injuries and no trains were placed in danger by the incident.
Network Rail engineers have attended and examined the scene and repairs are being carried out.
British Transport Police and Devon and Cornwall's arson task force are investigating.
