Two South West zoos are celebrating after being honoured at an awards ceremony held at Woburn Safari Park.

Paignton and Newquay zoos were singled out for praise in a range of categories in the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) Awards.

Paignton Zoo won awards for its work in the breeding of the hazel dormouse and also for the training and husbandry of Colobus monkeys.

Both Newquay and Paignton were also recognised for their educational work.

Environment Minister Elliot Morley attended the ceremony on 10 November where there were 12 winners and 21 commendations chosen from 91 entries.

Dr Miranda Stevenson from BIAZA said: "Conservation within zoos and aquariums is no longer a matter of choice.

"These awards recognise and celebrate the vital contributions that our members are making to conservation and education each year."
