Claudia Sturt took over in July 2003 |
Dartmoor Prison is marking a turn around in its fortunes in the year since its new governor took over. Last year it was officially a problem prison but this year it is meeting the majority of its targets.
In 2003 the Prison Service bench-marking programme gave it a performance level of two.
Most of last year's problem prisons did not show significant improvement, but Dartmoor has now reached performance level three.
That means it is judged to be delivering a reasonable and decent regime.
The Prison Service annual report also reveals a very low number of serious assaults taking place in the prison compared with other category C jails.
Claudia Sturt took over in mid-July last year, when Dartmoor was facing serious challenges.
It had been threatened with possible privatisation if it did not show rapid improvement
There is still a way to go before it can be described as exceptionally high performing, but the prison is in a very different position to last year.
