Tax capping could deter tourists
Torre Abbey Sands
It is claimed tourists have complained about dirty beaches
The council tax cap in Torbay is driving tourists away, according to the council's Conservative group leader.

Councillor Jean Turnbull says she has already heard of holidaymakers cutting short their visits to the bay.

She says she has had complaints about dirty streets, overgrown grass and beaches covered in stinking seaweed, which is damaging the tourist industry.

The government cut the authority's council tax increase from 9.9% to 8.5% on Thursday.

Local Government Minister Nick Raynsford announced the capping measures, rejecting Torbay's appeal against the decision.

If the capping is approved by the House of Commons, Torbay Council will need to issue revised bills at a cost of about 100,000.

Councillor Turnbull says residents may be pleased by a cut in their council tax bills, but will suffer from further cuts in services.
