Bashing bracken to preserve moor
Dartmoor cross
The roots of bracken can damage
A large group of volunteers in Devon is attempting to control bracken surrounding ancient monuments on Dartmoor.

The plant has invasive roots which can damage walls and other structures.

Environmentalists say June is the ideal time of year to control it.

The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, which is helping the Dartmoor Preservation Association (DPA), says the organisation plays a vital role.

Although bracken bashing seems quite destructive, in the longer term it will have a positive impact on the moor
Paul Padfield
Spokesman Paul Padfield said: "We can get hold of the volunteers and the DPA provide the work.

"It's fantastic locations and good, worthwhile conservation work.

"It's good for volunteers because they can see they're doing something quite definite.

"Although bracken bashing seems quite destructive, in the longer term it will have a positive impact on the moor."
